Manufacturers are being invited to find out how working with young people can prove to be a real benefit at a major conference which celebrates the ties between education and business.
Members of the team behind the Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD), one of the Government’s new diplomas for 14-19 year-olds, will join representatives from other phases of diploma delivery at this year’s National Conference of the Institute for Education Business Excellence. The event takes place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on March 11.
Derek Jones, head of quality and training standards for food and drink sector skills council Improve, is continuing to lead the development of the Diploma in MPD. He said: “This is a great opportunity for those involved in work-related learning to come and see and hear about what the Diploma in MPD can offer both manufacturing employers and students. People who visit us at the conference will be able to learn about which employers are involved in delivering the Diploma, how they are involved, the kind of projects students take part in and see where the Diploma is and will be available in the future.
“It’s important we attend events like this so that people who may not have come across the Diploma in MPD (and diplomas more generally) can see what opportunities are out there in terms of work-related learning. They will also gain an understanding of how this kind of qualification can have mutual benefits for both employers and students.”
The new diplomas are being launched in phases. Phase one diplomas, which include Creative and Media and Engineering, were launched in 2008. Phase two diplomas, which include the Diploma in MPD and Business Administration and Finance, were launched last September. Another group, phase three, will be launched later this year these include Retail Business and Sport and Active Leisure. Each phase will be represented at the Diploma stand.
The conference will bring together delegates from business, education and government and will feature high-profile speakers, including Iain Wright, minister for 14-19 reform and Apprenticeships, and David Fairhurst, senior vice president and chief people officer (UK and Northern Europe) at McDonald's Restaurants Ltd.
The event will look to promote the latest professional practice from every corner of the education-business partnerships sector through practical workshops, round-the-table discussions and an exhibition marketplace.
School teachers and college lecturers, education business partnership organisations, private sector education managers and local authority representatives involved in work-related learning are expected to attend.
