Themes of the Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD)

The Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD) has three main themes:

Foundation Level

Product design and material science considers the process of manufacturing a product from initial design and raw materials, to the sale and marketing of the finished product. Young people learn about how future product development can only be successful with a detailed knowledge of manufacturing technology. They gain an insight into the combination of science and design that leads to innovation and new products, as well as considering sustainability and waste reduction.


Higher Level

Business and enterprise introduces young people to how manufacturing works from a business perspective. Students take part in a range of business and enterprise activities that give them practical experience of how the manufacturing industry works. Learners will explore a range of business activities across all areas of manufacturing and consider the importance of manufacturing in relation to the local, national and global economy.


Advanced Level

Production systems looks at the implementation and improvement of manufacturing techniques, as well as working practices. Students are given an insight into the production methods for manufacturing a range of products and develop an understanding of the skills, techniques and processes needed to turn ideas into reality. This theme also focuses on quality assurance and continuous improvement techniques.
