The Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD) is one of ten Diplomas, which are currently available in a variety of schools and colleges across England. It is for young people who are aged between 14 and 19 years old, and is available at three different levels – Foundation, Higher and Advanced. By 2011, there will be a total of 17 different Diploma subjects available.
This new approach to learning mixes the practical with the theoretical to provide you with the best of both worlds. You get the chance to visit employers and complete at least 10 days work experience, as well as learn in school and college.
You will also develop a detailed understanding of manufacturing and product design, as well as a range of practical skills needed to work in this and many other sectors. Through working on a project and having the chance to choose additional qualifications, you will be able to study areas you are particularly interested in.
This new qualification will also help you to develop the transferable skills which are an essential part of studying, work and everyday life. These include communication, maths and ICT, as well as team working and creative thinking.
With many next steps available to you after the Diploma in MPD, it is a good qualification if you are looking to keep your options open. A variety of university and college courses, a wide range of Apprenticeships and the world of work are all next steps you will be able to consider.
